LES VARIATIONS

Formed by a trio of Moroccan-born French Sephardic Jews, Les Variations began in 1966 as a rock and roll cover band touring Europe. Singing primarily in English during their recording career and playing in an otherwise undistinguished hard rock format, their best tracks represented a unique convergence of rock with Moroccan-Arab-Berber influences.

Popular in France, Les Variations were signed by an American label in 1974 and appeared on their way to breaking into the U.S. market. They headlined television’s The Midnight Special concert show and the syndicated FM rock program King Biscuit Flower Hour while touring the states. Although Les Variations broke up by the end of 1975 before capitalizing on their inroads, they set a sonic precedent for 21st-century “Oriental metal” bands such as Myrath, a Franco-Tunisian group balancing progressive power-metal with traditional orchestral music of North Africa.

Suggested Albums: Take It or Leave It (1971); Moroccan Roll (1974); Café de Paris (1975)
